Intolerable Act of 1774
About:
The Intolerable Acts were a series of laws meant to punish the Colonists of Massachusetts for the Boston Tea Party. These Intolerable Acts shut down the Boston Harbor, granted British Soldiers to be tried in Great Britain, and shut down all Town Hall Meetings.
Importance:
The shutting down of the Harbor meant that there was no trade coming in or out of the Colonies. It was the Colonies' most profitable harbors. Furthermore, in cases where the British Military suppressed riots in which Colonists were killed, they would be allowed to be tried in British Courts rather than Colonial Courts. The British Soldiers definitely would have a less punitive (punishable) ruling there than at the Colonies. Lastly, Town Hall meetings was the center place for Government in Massachusetts. Shutting this down meant that the Colonists could not self-govern no more.
